Moe Spanbroek, IA, 2028
I am 20 years old, originally from South Florida, and I now study in Baltimore at MICA.
Project Overview
Working with mycelium on a handmade structure.

Process
I sourced oak twigs from outside and used hemp cord to bind and weave a structure. Investigating how the mycelium will expand across the gaps, “drawing” shapes and giving the piece structure. Mycelium was struggling so we applied a slurry that mixed two strains and rice flour. This led to immense growth and later helped feed contamination of green mold. In my final display I kept the larger flag in a grow bag to keep my peers safe as well as to show the interaction of the green mold and mycelium.
FINAL DISPLAY:
Light is used to show the growth of mycelium between strands.
