Nicholas Mittman- Mycelium

Nicholas Mittman, Interdisciplinary Sculpture, 2027

Interdisciplinary Sculpture major at MICA. Originally transferred from Harford Community College; Nicholas enjoys working with mediums such as Charcoal, pen & ink, and wood to create pieces that depict the themes of horror. His fascination to explore the unconventional side of art has led to him expanding his practice with biomaterial as a new medium.

Project Overview

This work has not been finished due to time restraints and the final picture of each “cookie cutter” will be posted in the future.

Process

I had these pre-existing wood pieces that I used a jigsaw to cut shapes into. I then decided to stuff the shapes with the mycelium and see if it will grow into those shapes or grow over the wood like in the image above. I believe either result will look cool when the mushrooms finish fruiting. I have left the other mold in the incubator for them to grow over break and I will then post those result once I get them back and move the two images up top down here. Stay tuned!
